St. Joseph was founded in early 1921 through the efforts of Sr. Mary Joseph, O.S.D, Sr. Mary Andrew, O.S.D., and a small cadre of dedicated Catholic families in Duluth Heights. The parish was named St. Joseph in honor of St. Mary Joseph and opened its first church at the corner of Arlington Avenue and Gilead Street.
Continued growth led to the construction of our current building, which opened in June of 1954. As with the original church, parishioners again helped in the actual building of the church and rectory. That spirit of collaboration remains a strong element of St. Joseph today.
Ordered in mid-2019 to merge with our sister parish of St. Lawrence, parishioners successfully appealed to the Vatican. St. Joseph was officially resurrected by Bishop Daniel Felton as an independent parish on the First Sunday of Advent, 2021. St. Joseph is dedicated to being "a beacon of hope to Duluth Heights."
